Make A Timeline

The average custom gown takes six to eight months to create, and that's not even counting fittings. Your dress is going to need alterations—wedding dress sizes differ from street sizes. Ideally, you should give your seamstress at least two months.

Create A Budget

The price of a wedding dress varies—you can spend a couple hundred dollars or thousands. Before making an appointment, establish a budget with whomever is paying for the dress. Tell your consultant the amount you want to spend so that she can help you find something within your price range. Having your heart set on a dress that is out of your price range is heartbreaking. Trust us, it happens more often than you might think!

These are important aspects of your wedding day look that you’ll want to allocate for. You’ll also want to include a portion of your budget for alterations, as most wedding gowns will need to be tailored to make sure it fits you perfectly.

Make a Mood Board

As you search for a wedding dress, it can be helpful to make a mood board. Put all your favorite gowns on a Pinterest board so you can see the different silhouettes and fabrics that appeal to you!

Consider Undergarments

Undergarments are completely up to you. It is more likely than not that you will not need to wear a bra under your wedding gown, since the cup will be built into the dress. Bring some shapewear or a strapless bra just in case!
